Chevy Cruze P0171: Causes, Checks & Common Fixes

A P0171 code means the engine computer is seeing a lean condition on Bank 1. On a Chevy Cruze—especially the 1.4L turbo—start by checking for unmetered air before buying sensors.

Safety: Work on a cool, secured vehicle when applicable. Follow the service information for your exact vehicle and use proper protective equipment.

What P0171 means

The engine is adding more fuel than expected to compensate for too much air, too little fuel, or a reading that makes the mixture appear lean.

Start with the easy checks

Inspect the intake tube, PCV/vacuum hoses, valve-cover area, intake manifold connections, and any hose or connector disturbed during recent work. Listen for hissing and look for split or disconnected lines.

Common Cruze trouble areas

On 1.4L engines, PCV-system faults and vacuum leaks can cause lean codes, rough idle, whistling, and misfires. A problem that appeared immediately after valve-cover work should make you recheck that work first.

Before replacing parts

Use scan data and, when available, a smoke test to confirm a leak. Fuel-pressure problems, exhaust leaks ahead of the oxygen sensor, and sensor faults are possible, but should be tested rather than guessed.

Bottom line

Diagnose the cause before ordering parts. Vehicle configurations vary, so verify specifications and procedures for your exact year, engine, and model.
